"Quite
unique - a course that teaches you to teach yourself!" Anna, CEO, NHS
"Should be
induction training for all Members." John, House of Commons
"I don't
consider writing to be my forte - I'm more action oriented - but this
course has totally changed my approach - I'm learning lots about myself,
am less stressed, and [my boss] has started asking my opinion on things,
which he'd never have done before!" Andy, Technical Director.
Much of what we
know about the history of civilisation comes from personal diaries.
The reflections of individuals, often (but by no means always) leaders,
who have spared a few minutes every day to note down the highlights of
their daily life, their thoughts, emotional responses and fantasies about
what is going on.
As they do so,
these people learn about themselves and become adept at separating their
own interpretation of events from the facts. They explore these
interpretations and ask, "Why?"
Why? is a
powerful question. So much so that most of us steer clear of it, and
yet to understand ourselves, our role in the world, and our impact on
life, we need to ask it. In this context, it is known as one of the
great existential questions.
The journey
that we embark on when we start a journal is a lifelong one, rich,
transforming and enjoyable. The process is relaxing, while the
insights are enlightening.
This course of
four one-hour sessions provides all the essentials to develop the habit of
journal keeping as a tool for reflective practice and personal
development.
We cover the
mechanics of writing a journal - what works and what doesn't; explore a
template to build the content into a valuable resource, finding balance
between what happened, our feelings, our interpretation and our learnings;
we analyse examples; and encourage one another in our initial steps.
We look at
different forms of journal - as a course companion, travel companion, the
background to a biography, and a tool for emotional and spiritual growth.
Intended to fit
around busy working lives, the course alone can be a powerful leadership
development tool and can also be built into existing training programmes
to help foster a climate of reflective practice.
