Have you
ever wondered "what's the point of all this?", or thought "surely there
must be more to life", or felt you are simply not living up to your
potential and asked "Why?"
Welcome to the
start of your spiritual journey! These questions have struck
philosophers for thousands of years. In fact, they've struck people
of all kinds, for thousands of years. They arrive in our lives at
different times and for different reasons - for some it might be the death
of someone important to us, for others a personal experience (not always
traumatic), while for many it is a midlife kind of thing!
The path
towards a set of answers that are personal to you, is known as a spiritual
journey. 'Spiritual' doesn't need to mean religious - it's about a
sense of being connected, being fulfilled, being happy inside oneself.
"The QUEST" is
a structured approach to finding this sense of fulfilment, a sense of
purpose, a sense of oneself. It's a series of 12 meetings, of
roughly 90 minutes each, held at regular intervals. They are run in
a small group of no more than a dozen participants, and take the form of
facilitated discussions, based around some reading material, one or two
topics for personal reflection, and your own experiences.
This programme
is based on the book, The Quest by Dawes, Dolley and Isaksen,
published in 2005, which forms the background to our exploration. A
copy of the book will be provided to each participant. To learn more
about The Quest and its pedigree, do visit the authors' website:
www.thequest.org.uk.
Other
programmes of spiritual development tend to focus on one Faith, and assume
that the person following them has largely already made up their mind as
to where they are going and how. The most obvious example is the
Alpha Course, which has been running in Christian churches for some
time. The QUEST makes no such assumptions - it is truly an
open-minded exploration, leaving the participant completely free to pursue
their own beliefs.
